Castlegar Peony Show 2018
Self-guided tour of Peony Gardens

SUNDAY, June 17th only.
10 to 4pm

You are invited to visit these gardens:

Castlegar:
Doukhobor Discovery Centre-112 Heritage Way, across from the Castlegar Airport. The Peony Gardens in the front courtyard have been gifted by the Castlegar group of the Canadian Peony Society. The first garden, from Indian Head SK Agricultural Farm, donated by Prairie Peony Society, Regina, SK (2015). The second raised bed, peonies from Whitney’s Back Acre, McLure, BC donated by Kalawsky GM (2016). The third collection facing the sun along the brick wall were donated by Dutch Girl Peonies (2017). The Castlegar Communities in Bloom team have planted all these peonies.

Kat & Bruce Enns, 602 Tamarack St. A significant collection of approximately 120 peonies. This garden won the Home Builders Best Backyard in Canada prize in 2016. This is your chance to see how they have capitalized on their beautiful location to create a peaceful and botanically interesting haven. Kudos for all that hard work we know went into creating this garden.

Beasley:
Dutch Girl Peony Farm, 5254 Queen Victoria Road, Beasley, BC. Turn off Highway 3A onto Beasley Road West east of the Beasley Fire Hall. At the top of that short hill, make a sharp right turn onto Queen Victoria Road.  Please proceed to the second entrance, the Dutch Girl Peony sign beckons you.  An impressive selection of potted peonies for sale and Peony Gardens to tour. Excellent  quality, stock and service.

Blewett:
Michael Wicks, 4260 Kays Rd, Blewett, BC  250-509-0064.  We recommended to park at cul-de-sac at the gate, and walk about .5 km. Garden to the left down grassy lane. Disabled only, may be driven further. Lovely collection of peonies, specialty collection of trees, the perfume of lilac and roses - most enjoyable.

Warfield:
Holly Pender-Love, 231 Currie St. Turn left at Tunnel Pub, two blocks past Korpack. This small peony garden surrounds the house and holds about 40 different peonies, early, mid and late blooming.

I grew up in Quesnel, the Cariboo Region and have lived in a different communities in the Southern Interior of BC - including Castlegar for a couple of years in the early '90s.
There was a garden when I was growing up, both vegetable and flowers, and I remember iris, peony and sweet peas, all of which, over the years, have figured in my gardens.
I have gardened for over fifty years progressing from a few house plants to vegetable and fruit gardens to feed the family, and starting my own bedding plants for my flower gardens. Today I am well into my retirement which means being as busy as ever, but on my own terms. I no longer grow vegetables or fruit – the Farmers’ Market provides these with a lot less work and a great variety of produce. My flower garden is all perennials, nothing I have to dig up in the fall and store for the winter.
I like too many different flowers to be a specialist plant grower, so I have a little bit of everything in my garden including various types of peonies.

In 2001 I qualified as a horticultural judge and completed the floral art judging course in 2011.
I have judged Parlour Shows and Flower Shows in the valley including the Interior Provincial Exhibition (IPE) in Armstrong and the Kelowna Flower Show. I have been on the executive of the local garden club as well as valley and provincial associations. I am very pleased to have been part of forming the Okanagan Floral Art Club.
I am looking forward to our visit to Castlegar, seeing all the beautiful peonies and meeting with the people putting on this wonderful show.

I was born in England and lived in Scotland until I was 12 when we immigrated to Canada and settled in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  My parents always worked on farms and so I was raised in a rural setting, helping my parents with the animals and my mother in her garden.
After 15 years in Canada my parents, my husband and I bought a farm.  We worked the land - milking cows, looking after the bees, raising chickens, turkeys and geese, playing with the horses and always gardening.  From my mother I absorbed the love of all manner of plants – from potatoes to roses.  Peonies were a favourite flower -hardy and absolutely beautiful - it seems like every home had peony bushes.

I studied at the University of Saskatchewan and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Laboratory Technology. Once married and still living on the farm, time constraints of an outside job, returning to University in 1984 for Bachelor of Commerce, working as a Chartered Accountant, raising two children and helping on the farm left little time for me to pursue any actual “knowledge” in the horticultural arena.
However, after living in Toronto and then Calgary for a few years, we finally were able to retire in the glorious Okanagan.  Wow -  Zone 5!  I can grow anything!  Compare this to Zone 2b in Saskatoon!  Thus started the academic pursuit of all plants.

Since retiring, I have embarked on a learning spree.  I obtained my BC Floral Art  judging certificate in 2011, and my BC Horticultural judging certificate and Master Gardener Certificate in 2012.  I have judged at the Interior Provincial Exhibition in Armstrong, BC and many other Okanagan and District flower and garden shows. Over the past three years I have participated in the American Rose Society Judging Program in Washington State and Oregon and will qualify at the end of 2018 as an American Rose Society judge.
To tell you the truth, I can hardly wait for spring, get growing, and come to Castlegar and check out all the peonies.  This is why I love, love, love judging flower shows - I get to go to neat places, meet wonderful people and savour the flowers!
